With more freedom being left up to the performer the work can very in length from 15 minutes to several hours, however typically a performance of the work lasts one hour. The 35 performers are encouraged to not begin at the same time as another performer and to move from the first to the second micro-phrase at their own will, thus not all performers will end together. Then one by one other performers, ideally 35, start playing the first of 53 micro-phrases. In this piece a pianist starts the piece by playing a repeated C that goes through the entire work. In C(1964) by, Terry Riley is often given the placeholder of the first minimal piece written. The main composers that helped to develop this style of composition were La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and Phillip Glass. In serial music a composers uses specific operations to create the piece while in minimal music composers often give performers specific operations that they have to do to perform a piece. While minimalistic music does not sound the same as serial music, they both can at times be called process music. The development of minimalism occurred in the 1960s in New York City as a reaction to the popular composition style of the time known as Total Serialism where in a composer would use serial techniques such as 12-tone rows and apply them not only to harmony, but to rhythm, dynamics, and tone color. In music however it is a style of composing that utilizes ideas such as, a constant pulse, very gradual transformations, and the repetition of small phrases that are often called cells, motifs, or micro-phrases.
